No major injuries have yet been found on the current island of Amorgos, but the approximately 2,000 inhabitants are being urged to leave the island – which most of them are said to have done.
The decision will give authorities faster access to state resources, and comes after an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 occurred early on Wednesday.
Just over a week ago, a state of emergency was declared on nearby Santorini, whose 16,000 inhabitants have left their island. There, schools will remain closed at least for this week.
The University of Athens has measured over 14,000 earthquakes in the sea around Santorini since January 26, a seismic activity that has puzzled researchers.
The earthquakes have so far caused minimal damage.
