Extra protein - and small, high-fat portions for the extra fragile. That is the proposal for new dietary guidelines for people over 65 developed by the Swedish National Food Agency.

There is different advice for different groups: those over 65 who are fit and those who are starting to lose their appetite and who are frail.

For the former, the same advice applies as for other adults: lots of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and fish, poultry, meat, eggs and legumes. And preferably extra protein, since muscle breakdown occurs more quickly as you age.

When appetite decreases and it is difficult to eat large portions, it is better to focus on many small meals with higher energy and protein content - preferably with extra fat in the food and full-fat dairy products. Vitamin D supplements are also recommended for everyone over 75.

The Swedish National Food Agency's proposal is now out for consultation.
