A Hungarian Gripen C plane crashed during a training exercise on Monday. According to Corren, which refers to Hungarian media, the crash was caused by a technical fault on the plane - the plane's screens started showing error messages and then suddenly went out.
The exact cause of the incident is not expected to be clear for several weeks, Hungarian media report. The manufacturer Saab has said it is assisting the investigation.
The pilot, a 51-year-old man described as very experienced, initially appeared to have managed to land but the plane skidded off the runway and he was forced to eject. He is now being treated for serious spinal cord injuries.
The Hungarian Defence Ministry has decided to stop all training flights with Gripen until the investigation is completed.
