An agreement between the government in Damascus and the pushed-back Kurdish SDF is to "unify Syrian territory." Kurdish forces are to be incorporated into the Syrian military.

The agreement follows the ceasefire announced earlier in January, after the new central government in Syria advanced deep into the former Kurdish autonomous region in northeastern Syria in a major offensive.

Both parties have confirmed the agreement, which aims to “unify Syrian territory and fully integrate” the Kurdish areas.

Soldiers are to leave the front lines and only government security forces are to be allowed into Kurdish-controlled cities.

Brigade in Kobane

According to the AFP news agency, some of the Kurds' demands have been met, including the incorporation of three SDF brigades into the Syrian military. A brigade will also be established in Kobane, a city on the border with Turkey and a symbol of the Kurdish forces' victory over the terrorist organization IS.

State-controlled media cite government sources as stating that all civilian and state institutions, as well as border crossings, will come under state control.

Integration into the structure of the central government should take place "step by step".

“Important step”

Syria's interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa - a former jihadist leader who led the overthrow of dictator Bashar al-Assad in 2024 - recently promised the Kurds increased rights and that Kurdish would be given the status of an official language.

The new agreement also contains guarantees for the Kurds' civil rights and right to education.

Elham Ahmad, representative of the political government in the Kurdish areas and one of the negotiators, writes on X that the agreement is "an important step on the path towards stability."

Washington's envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, calls it a "historic milestone." The US supported the SDF in the war against IS, but has moved closer to the new Damascus government.
