Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a security meeting on Tuesday on the occupied Golan Heights and the demilitarized buffer zone controlled by the UN's peacekeeping forces.
The Israeli military has previously occupied parts of the buffer zone despite international protests.
Also present at the meeting were Defense Minister Israel Katz and representatives from the army and intelligence services. Katz's office stated that it was the first time Mount Hermon had been visited by Israel's top leadership since the military occupied the area.
"Hermon's top serves as Israel's eyes for threats from both near and far," stated Katz's office.
The UN's special envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, urged Israel on Tuesday to leave the UN-controlled buffer zone and warned Israel against building settlements on occupied areas.
Pedersen also urged Israel to refrain from further airstrikes in Syria, since President Bashar al-Assad's regime fell, Israel has struck 350 targets in Syria, he said.
Such attacks expose the civilian population to even greater risks and undermine the possibilities of an orderly political transition period.
