The Israeli prime minister was seen leaving the White House on Tuesday after just over an hour inside the building.

Trump's press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, called the meeting "positive and productive" in a post on X, while Netanyahu's staff were even more positive.

"It was an extremely positive meeting. The Prime Minister and the President had a fantastic and in-depth discussion on key issues, primarily Iran," the statement said, according to AFP.

Netanyahu himself says in a recorded speech that the two are united in the goal of ensuring that Iran can never develop nuclear weapons.

The meeting was not an official state visit - but it is the first time they have met since the start of the Iran war in February. The relationship between them has been strained recently and before the meeting there was speculation that they would not reach an agreement in the conversation.

Just hours before the meeting, Trump told Fox News that "I don't need 'Bibi' (Netanyahu) to know things," referring to intelligence on Iran's nuclear programme and possible attacks on it.

Trump also claimed at the time that he had saved Israel.

"If I were not president today, Israel would not exist," he said, according to The Times of Israel.

Netanyahu, in turn, has objected to the US's expected sale of the F-35 fighter jet to Turkey.

The Israeli prime minister is in Washington DC primarily for the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham.
