“We are now moving from the search and rescue phase to the search and recovery phase,” Phanindra Paudel, head of the national crisis management center, told Reuters.
More than 5,000 people are still missing after the flash flood, which claimed at least 1,455 lives.
The disaster, which occurred in late August, is believed to have started with an ice avalanche (glacial collapse) on a melting glacier. It triggered a landslide and a massive flood of water and mud that rushed down the valleys at high speed.
The rock and ice slide was so powerful that it was registered as a seismic event measuring magnitude 5.2.
