USA's president Donald Trump has held a meeting with Nato's Secretary General Mark Rutte in the White House, against the background of the attempts to achieve peace in Ukraine. Every time I have spoken with Vladimir (Putin) I have had good conversations, but then they lead nowhere, says Trump in connection with the meeting.

Trump would have met Russia's President Vladimir Putin sometime in the coming weeks. But on Tuesday, those plans were cancelled.

On Wednesday, the US also announced new sanctions, targeting Russia's two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil.

During the press conference with Rutte, Trump expressed frustration about his attempts to achieve peace being hindered.

They (Ukraine and Russia) hate each other and that makes this more difficult than it should be, said the President.

Rutte's visit to Washington takes place after Trump recently met with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj. According to media reports, the atmosphere was tense, with disagreements about whether Ukraine should agree to certain territorial concessions to get an end to Russia's war.

Earlier on Wednesday, before the evening meeting with Trump, Rutte met with members of Congress.

In connection with this, he was asked if his visit was a sign that the Zelenskyj meeting had gone badly, which he dismissed. The meeting was "successful", said Rutte, and stated that his trip to Washington had been planned in advance in order to discuss Trump's "vision for peace in Ukraine".

I have full confidence in Donald Trump, he is the only one who can steer this in the country, said Rutte.
