NATO's military committee was previously led by Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone. Dragone confirms the selection of General Breuer on Platform X.
"The defence chiefs have chosen to place their confidence in you at a demanding time for Euro-Atlantic security," Dragone writes.
The committee was established shortly after NATO was created in 1949. It advises NATO's key decision-making body, the North Atlantic Council. It also plays an important role in NATO's military-political and strategic planning, including on nuclear weapons issues.
Carsten Breuer will take office in July next year.
