A federal judge ordered on Friday a temporary halt to the US government's deployment of the Texas National Guard in Chicago, Illinois. By then, about 200 troops had already arrived in the city.
Now, an appeals court has decided that the force may stay in the city, but without intervening or being used. The decision applies to both the Texas and Illinois National Guard.
Soldiers from the Texas National Guard arrived in the city earlier in the week to, according to the Trump administration, help maintain law and order. Chicago's mayor and Illinois governor, both Democrats, have described the move as both dangerous and illegal.
