Young people who have been drafted and healthcare professionals who are no longer working in healthcare could relieve the burden on healthcare in the event of war. This is proposed by the National Board of Health and Welfare.

The agency proposes three different options in which between 10,000 and 20,000 people would be called up for civilian service over a five-year period. Of these, between 3,000 and 8,000 would be people with previous nursing training.

According to the National Board of Health and Welfare, a government decision in the near future would make it possible to start basic education after conscription no earlier than autumn 2028, while compulsory military service for doctors, nurses and assistant nurses could start in 2027.

"Compulsory service is a powerful last resort measure that can quickly strengthen our capabilities and give us access to thousands of extra hands when needed most," says Björn Eriksson, Director General of the National Board of Health and Welfare, in a press release.

Civilian service is the civilian level of military service and more positions may be investigated in the future. The National Board of Health and Welfare mentions dental care as an area that requires continued analysis.
