Long-distance specialist Myhlback looked red-hot in the sprint in the Swedish premiere in Gällivare.
He was far ahead in the qualifiers and impressed in his quarter-final.
But in the semi-final he made a false start – and together with the yellow card that remained from a roller skiing race in August, it meant that he was eliminated from the competition.
Former cross-country star and SVT expert Mathias Fredriksson was furious about the rule.
I think they are two separate sports, what you do in the summer on roller skis should stay there. It should have been reset. That has to be changed, he says in SVT's broadcast about the International Ski Federation's FIS regulations.
Myhlback was disappointed afterwards.
It's really sad, I felt really good today and I have a hard time seeing how anyone would have hit me, he says.
With an advanced placement, Myhlback could have been selected for the World Cup premiere in Ruka next weekend and in the longer term for the Olympics in Milano-Cortina. That chance has now diminished.
It's a real shame for Alvar, he looked really sharp today. It would have been fun to see him in a final. I hope he rides the rest of the weekend so we get to see more of him, says national team manager Anders Byström.
