The military junta in Myanmar denies accusations that it has committed genocide against the Muslim Rohingya.
The junta has sent a minister to ongoing proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. The minister dismisses the accusations as unfounded, with “emotional language and fuzzy facts.”
Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled Myanmar when the military forcibly entered their regions in 2017. Reports have described indiscriminate killings, torture and rape.
The military government says it was forced to act against insurgents, "terrorists," after several acts of violence.
Separate genocide cases are being pursued in the International Criminal Court (ICC) and under universal jurisdiction in Argentina.
