The quake occurred about two kilometers under the small town in Meiktila and had a magnitude of 5.5, according to the American geological authority USGS.
There are no reports of major damage to buildings or fatalities.
In Myanmar, the traditional water festival Thingyan, which symbolizes purification and renewal, is currently being celebrated as the new year.
The celebration is more subdued than usual, following the large earthquake on March 28 that claimed at least 3,600 lives. The cities of Mandalay and Sagaing lie in ruins and hundreds of people are still living in tent camps. Many lack functioning toilets and have to queue for hours for drinking water.
Myanmar's ruling military junta has, out of consideration for the earthquake victims, banned music and dance during the five-day festival.
