The accident occurred when the tanker truck, loaded with gasoline, lost control along a highway and crashed into 17 other vehicles – and then caught fire, according to a statement from local authorities.
The lack of an effective railway system for transporting goods makes deadly truck accidents common in Africa's most populous country.
Earlier in January, 98 people died in a tanker truck accident after attempting to transfer gasoline from a crashed tanker truck to another. The authorities have since launched a campaign against that type of behavior.
This is happening in the light of gasoline prices increasing in the country since President Bola Tinubu's government decided to remove subsidies to instead use the money for development purposes.
