The Green Party is launching its spring budget motion as a "kickstart" for the climate transition, which will include SEK 4 billion in 2026.

This includes SEK 3.5 billion to subsidize regional and municipal transport.

In the longer term, the goal is to introduce a “Sweden Card”, which has been presented previously. The card will allow an adult to travel by public transport for SEK 499 per month. However, it will cost the state significantly more than the initial subsidy of SEK 3.5 billion.

The "kickstart" also includes government tax credits for companies that make green investments, which is estimated to cost SEK 150 million in 2026, but which will eventually grow to SEK 4.5 billion on an annual basis.

Says no

The Green Party also rejects the government's proposal to lower taxes on gasoline and diesel to meet rising fuel prices.

The Swedish people are being locked into an even deeper fossil fuel dependency that has created the crisis we are in, says spokesman Daniel Helldén.

But the Green Party wants to introduce special transport support aimed at those who live in the countryside and are dependent on cars, as the party also proposed last fall.

Those who live in rural and sparsely populated areas should be able to receive support to use a car to get to and from work and to drive their children to leisure activities, says economic policy spokesperson Janine Alm Ericson.

The transport subsidy amounts to SEK 2,900 per adult per year, according to the Green Party. The subsidy would cost the state just over SEK 4 billion.

Tax for the “super rich”

The Green Party also wants to provide households with increased support in other ways. The spring budget motion proposes an increase in child benefit of SEK 800 for single parents.

The government's investments in the spring amended budget, which are financed through loans, amount to SEK 7.7 billion. The Green Party's investments in its spring budget motion amount to SEK 9.5 billion, but according to the party, some of them are financed, for example, by rejecting reduced fuel taxes in 2026.

In the long term, the party wants to introduce a kind of capital tax on assets of at least SEK 1 billion.

It is necessary that very large fortunes be taxed more fairly, says Alm Ericson.

The Green Party also opposes the state providing money to the Videberg Kraft consortium, which was formed to build new nuclear power. However, the party supports the government's electricity subsidy.

Transport support for people in rural or sparsely populated areas who are dependent on cars: SEK 4.05 billion

Cheaper public transport: SEK 3.5 billion

Extra child allowance for single parents: SEK 1 billion

Protection of forests with high biological and climatic values: SEK 0.5 billion

Energy efficiency improvement: SEK 0.2 billion

State green tax credits: SEK 0.15 billion in 2026 (SEK 4.5 billion annually going forward)
