For girls, this year's list shows a bit of rotation at the top. Vera is the most common girls' name in 2025, according to the Swedish Tax Agency's preliminary figures. A total of 605 girls were given the name in 2025 - a bit of a comeback, as Vera came in second place in 2023 but slipped to fifth place in 2024. In an otherwise even top, the gap to second-place Astrid is large, just over 80 newborn girls.
On the boys' list, Noah is unchallenged number one so far. In third place is Liam, who came in fourth last year. The Anglo-Saxon trend in boys' names in recent years looks set to continue.
This year's list has some rockets - that is, names that have made a significant climb. One of them is the girls' name Minou.
- She has climbed almost a hundred places, from 210 to 101, says Mathilda Schönbeck, a statistician at the Swedish Tax Agency.
Flora, Fred and Matteo have also moved up. The popular older names, such as Elsa and Alma, seem to go in cycles.
"Maybe you want to name your child after a grandmother you liked," says Mathilda Schönbeck.
There are also names that are going the other way. Emelie and Hampus have declined in popularity. In 2024, two newborns were named Soraya, which has disappeared completely this year.
Statisticians can only speculate about what determines the choice of names, but it is not entirely unlikely that famous people - for example, award-winning table tennis players - can inspire.
"I thought Truls would be at the top, and it has also been a rocket, you could say, from place 190 to 162. I think it is a Truls effect," says Schönbeck.
