The eleventh-ranked Swede defeated the Englishman Liam Pitchford, ranked 64th in the world, in three straight sets.
The match was over after 21 minutes, but it was not without drama. Truls Möregårdh saved two set points in the first set and was also behind in the third with 0–4.
We have met several times and this was the best match I've played against him in a long time. It was actually one of the best matches I've played this year. I'm super happy with my game, 3–0 is very strong, says Möregårdh in the post-match interview on Youtube.
Pitchford had two set points in the first set, but blew both when Möregårdh turned 8–10 to 12–10.
In the second, the Swede pulled away to 5–0 and won the set with 11–5. In the third, Möregårdh turned 0–4 to 11–9 and finished by paying tribute to football star Viktor Gyökeres by making the same goal celebration with his hands in front of his face.
In the quarterfinals, he will face very tough opposition – world number five Félix Lebrun, whom Möregårdh has a 0–2 record against.
It's going to be fun to meet him, says the 22-year-old Swede.
He has lost twice to the Frenchman's brother Alexis in recent weeks, including in the European Championship semifinal. So now he's out for revenge against the Lebrun brothers.
Now I hope to be able to win this time, says Möregårdh.
