Möregårdh on the conflict: "It's about safety"

Table tennis star Truls Möregårdh breaks the silence about the conflict that has arisen between the Olympic silver medalist and the Swedish Table Tennis Association. "Performing table tennis at a world level is much about security", writes Truls Möregårdh in an SMS to SVT.

The quarrel is about who should get to coach Möregårdh during competitions. The star wants his brother Malte – who is his personal trainer – to coach him in competitions.

"I train best when I get the information from the match back into training again. Pretty obvious and 'basic'. We in my team have been working since the Olympic Games in Paris with a few technical things that I'm looking forward to trying in the match", he writes to SVT.

"Important with own coach"

He also emphasizes that they are actively working on the mental part.

"Important then with own coach. I'm eager to develop further".

Previously, national team players had the opportunity to have a personal sponsor on the national team jersey, which for the Swedish world number seven meant that he could bring his brother to competitions as a match coach.

After the summer's Olympic success, that opportunity disappeared when the agreements were rewritten. Möregårdh did not want to sign the agreement and then the association allegedly threatened to drop the star from the European Championship in Austria in October 2024.

Three days before the European Championship last autumn, the association set a deadline and told Truls that "if you don't sign, you won't be allowed to participate", said Carl Möregårdh, father of the ping-pong star, to Skånska Dagbladet over the weekend.

TT has been in contact with the association's CEO Thomas Buza during the morning.

We basically have no comments at present. We are working on the issue, says Thomas Buza.

Möregårdh refers to the fact that the French brothers Felix and Alexis Lebrun – both are top ten-ranked in the world – have a setup with their own coach.

"I play my best ping-pong when I have a coach who knows me as a person and from daily training. There are many skilled match coaches in the world. The point is to know the player. All players have different setups and are differently sensitive to who coaches" he writes in an SMS to SVT.
