Both in 2022 and last year, Truls Möregårdh has suffered final losses in the prestigious Europa Top 16 tournament.
Both times, Darko Jorgic has stood in the way of the Swede winning the title for the first time in his career.
So also this time.
Truls Möregårdh fell in the semifinal after a dramatic final set. The score was 1–3 in sets (10–12, 11–3, 7–11, 14–16).
And it wasn't just during the game that it became dramatic. At one point, boos were heard from the audience in Swiss Montreux, in connection with Möregårdh kicking the ball away.
In the third set, at 1–1, the Swede's frustration boiled over. Jorgic had several lucky bounces, and most of the edge balls went the way of the three-time reigning champion.
According to his father, Carl Möregårdh, it wasn't about boos against the Swedish star. Instead, the boos were against the referee, who chose to give the Swede a yellow card for the incident. He tells Skånska Dagbladet.
The 13th-ranked Slovenian then went on to win the two subsequent sets.
In the final, Jorgic faced French world number one Alexis Lebrun. There, the Frenchman won with 3–1 in sets.
