More Swedes Support Increased Public Funding for the Arts

Four out of ten Swedes want to see an increase in public support for culture. Only 18 per cent want to see a reduction. This is shown by a new survey conducted on behalf of Svensk Scenkonst.

The survey, which for the sixth year in a row has been conducted by Insight Intelligence, is based on responses from 1,000 people in Sweden.

The attitude towards the government's initiative to develop a Swedish cultural canon is, however, cooler in the survey. Only 24 percent want Sweden to develop one, while 32 percent want it to a small or no extent.

Despite the economic downturn and increased everyday expenses, most are willing to pay more for culture this year than before. The average amount that the respondents are willing to pay for a musical has increased by 64 kronor, and for concerts, the amount now stands at 773 kronor, 56 kronor more than last year.

Every fourth person among the respondents has attended a concert in the past six months. It is the highest proportion since the survey began in the pandemic year 2020.
