Last year, 33,469 people applied for debt restructuring, an increase of 1,778 from the previous year. Of the applications, 43 percent were approved.
"Many households have small financial margins and we know that debts have often been built up for a long time before they end up with the Swedish Enforcement Authority. We see that both the number of applications for debt restructuring and the number of granted applications are increasing," says Per-Olof Lindh, head of unit at the authority, in a press release.
Applications from men aged over 65 have increased the most, while applications from women aged 18 to 30 have decreased the most.
People with debts that are so large that they cannot repay them within a foreseeable period of time can apply for debt restructuring from the Swedish Enforcement Authority.
