Monaco, Belgium, Malta, San Marino and Luxembourg have all recognized a Palestinian state. The recognitions were made by each country from the podium at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Belgium will, however, only proceed with the legal process of recognition when all hostages are released and Hamas no longer has power in the area, according to CNN.

Andorra announced its intention to also recognize a Palestinian state, on the same terms as Belgium.

Earlier, the conference on a two-state solution began with France recognizing a Palestinian state. The conference was boycotted by Israel and the US, which have dismissed a two-state solution. The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, was also not present because he was denied a visa by the US.

On Sunday, an independent Palestine was also recognized by Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Portugal.
