The crisis-hit Liberals are now suffering further defections.

Torkild Strandberg announces that he is stepping down from the party leadership - but will continue to work for the Liberals at the local level.

Earlier on Friday, Gulan Avci, the Liberals' defense policy spokesperson, announced that she will not run in this fall's election.

"Gulan Avci is not running for re-election and I want to thank her for her fantastic contribution to liberalism. Torkild Strandberg continues for the Liberals in the service of the people of Landskrona," says the Liberals' party secretary Fredrik Brange in a written comment to TT.

Louise Eklund, first deputy group leader, will not run again in the parliamentary election, reports SVT.

Since the 2022 election, four members of parliament have left their seats. In addition, six more have announced that they will not run in this year's election. Only six of the sixteen who were elected to the Riksdag almost four years ago are running in the September election.

The Liberals are currently rocked by record low opinion poll numbers. In a poll from Ekot/Indikator this week, the Liberals received a shocking 1.4 percent, far below what is required to enter parliament.
