Last year, the average occupancy rate in permanent places was 122 percent in remand prisons and 141 percent in prisons, which is mainly explained by an increased influx combined with longer sentences.
The number of young people also continues to increase. During the year, 558 detentions of 15–17-year-olds were ended, which is 17 percent more than in 2024.
"The fact that more and more children and young people are being taken into our detention centers and prisons places great demands on our operations," says Susanne Wedin, department director at the authority, in a press release.
The number of initiated enforcement proceedings against women also increased by seven percent to nearly 3,350 cases in 2025.
