More and more people are testifying to ghosting in working life

The word ghosting is used to describe when the person you're dating stops responding. Now the phenomenon has also established itself in the labor market, shows a new survey.

According to a new survey from LinkedIn, many job seekers testify that they do not receive any feedback on jobs they have applied for.

Meanwhile, recruiters on their part experience that they receive large quantities of applications that completely lack relevance for the advertised position.

In a press release, Lisa Gunnarsson, Nordic Manager for LinkedIn, says that the matching between recruiters and candidates is not working.

Vague Requirements

Erik Haglöf is a recruitment consultant at Bohmans Network and believes that the situation can be partly explained by the many platforms for job advertisements that exist today.

When you reach out very broadly, you also get very many applications, he says.

He also believes that general and vague descriptions of the advertised position contribute to applicants not receiving feedback.

If the employer is unclear about what is actually required for the role, there is a risk that very many applications will come in, several of which may come from unqualified candidates.

Of the 1,000 people surveyed, 35 percent stated that they had been ghosted by a recruiter at some point.

At the same time, 500 HR and recruitment managers responded in a separate study that three out of four recruiters do not have time to respond to all applications.

"Duty to Inform"

To avoid applicants being ghosted and recruiters drowning in applications, Erik Haglöf believes that communication between employers and recruiters must improve. According to him, the responsibility ultimately lies with them.

The one who takes the job seeker's time has a duty and obligation to inform about how it goes. There are several tools to have good communication with the applicant, so ghosting should not occur.
