"Today, as an adult, you can vote in parliamentary elections, do military service, get a driver's license and buy alcohol at the pub. So it is also reasonable that the age limit for shopping at Systembolaget is 18," says party leader and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in a press release.

The background is that alcohol consumption among young people has dropped sharply while too many people buy smuggled alcohol or homemade spirits, writes the Moderate Party.

For spirits above 22 percent, the current age limit of 20 should continue to apply, according to the proposal. The same rules apply in Norway and Finland.
