Mocked with pictures of ex-dictator

When Chinese Shandong Taishan hosted Gwangju from South Korea in the Asian Champions League, the away team was taunted with pictures of the despised former South Korean dictator Chun Doo-Hwan. Now the Chinese football club is banning an unknown number of supporters for life.

The club apologizes to the opposing team and also states that the police have been involved. If fines are pending for the incident, Shandong will take legal action against the supporters for their actions in the stands during Tuesday's match.

General Chun Doo-Hwan seized power in South Korea through a military coup in 1979 when the previous dictator Park Chung-Hee was murdered.

The following year, protests in the city of Kwangju were brutally suppressed, and over 200 people were confirmed dead or reported missing, according to official figures. Activists claim that the numbers are three times higher.

Chun was sentenced to death in August 1996 for mutiny, treason, and corruption. He was pardoned and released after two years in prison.

He was the country's president from 1980 to 1988 and passed away in November 2021. Then, his widow apologized for the "pain and scars" caused by her husband's harsh rule.

Chun Doo-Hwan himself has never apologized for his actions.
