Erik Mobärg, Olympic gold medalist in Beijing four years ago, was holding second place in his round of 16 heat but suffered a back strain on the landing after the final jump in Livigno and was overtaken.
In the aftermath, the 28-year-old was disqualified after it was revealed that he had straddled a gate in the first corner of the race.
I skied down the track. It's not certain it would have been enough anyway. But it's really sad that it has to end so quickly. I'm really disappointed, of course, said Erik Mobärg in the mixed zone after the race.
Landed on French skis
David Mobärg fell in the subsequent round of 16 and was also eliminated. The 26-year-old landed on Evan Kluft's skis after a jump and thought the Frenchman had taken his line.
"I was outnumbered. I couldn't do anything differently," David Mobärg told TV4.
He elaborates in the mixed zone but weighs his words.
The guy in front (Kluft) "drifted" a lot to the right, which I wasn't prepared for. I didn't want to crash into him; we didn't want to crash into each other. Of course it's sad.
None of the Mobärg brothers received a valid result.
“Shitty”
It's really sad that we're both out. The margins are incredibly small in ski cross. The level is incredibly high right now. Sometimes you have to have a little bit of fluidity, said David Mobärg.
Last Friday, 24-year-old Linnea Mobärg, the youngest of the siblings, was eliminated in the Olympic quarterfinals. She therefore became the best-placed Mobärg sibling at the Olympics with a tenth-place finish.
Sandra Näslund won Sweden's only Olympic ski cross medal in Italy, a bronze.
