Now MLS football will switch to playing in the fall-spring. Absolutely the right way to go, says New York Red Bulls professional Emil Forsberg. If you want to get a foothold in Europe, you need to do it, says the national team midfielder.

The decision was made by the owners of the North American Football League, to get more in line with other major football leagues and adapt to the transfer windows. But also to make it easier for players to get time off for championships that usually take place in the summers.

At the same time, it avoids the MLS playoffs clashing with when the NFL plays its biggest games and the NBA and NHL have started.

"This is one of the most important decisions in the history of the league," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber, according to the AP.

Swedish US professional Emil Forsberg is positive about the change.

It can definitely give something. If you want to get involved in Europe, you need to do it, I think. I mean, now we've had matches while it's the international break and it's clear that the national teams want to send their best players. So if you want to get involved in Europe and have the rhythm that you have there, that's absolutely the best way to do it, says Forsberg.

The shift from spring–autumn to autumn–spring will take place in 2027 when the series is scheduled to start in mid- or late July and then run until April 2028 with playoffs in May.

MLS will have a long winter break from early December to early February.
