After crossing the finish line, Monsén slammed a pole into the snow in disappointment. He lost a lot of time early in the run and finished 1.77 seconds behind Swiss winner Marco Odermatt, which was only enough for a modest 43rd place.
The Swedish Olympic squad currently has no male alpine skiers. During the weekend in Kitzbühel, there will be one last opportunity to qualify for the Olympics, but after missing the super-G, Monsén's only hope now lies in Saturday's classic Hahnenkamm downhill race.
On Sunday, the slalom awaits, and Kristoffer Jakobsen - who has not managed to finish a race all season - hopes to secure an Olympic spot at the last minute.
