Andrejeva is further to the third round after 6–3, 6–4 against American Ashlyn Krueger. The victory came on Court Simonne-Mathieu, the same place where she, as a 16-year-old, secured a place in the third round in the French Championships for the first time in 2023.
I have fine memories here, says Andrejeva in the victory interview.
Mirra Andrejeva is sixth-seeded in the ongoing Grand Slam tournament and one of the challengers for the title. Last year, it was a big sensation when a 17-year-old Andrejeva defeated then-world number two Aryna Sabalenka (now world number one) in the quarterfinals.
Now she hopes to reach a Grand Slam semifinal for the second time in her career. Yet, she did not feel so secure in Thursday's match against Krueger as the victory figures indicated.
It was not an easy match. I lost to her in the US Open, she is a very strong and powerful player, so I knew I had to be aggressive. And I had some problems with my serve, so I'm satisfied that I could keep calm and found a way to victory in the end, says Andrejeva.
In the next match, the winner of the meeting between Taiwanese Joanna Garland and Julia Putintseva from Kazakhstan awaits.
Second-seeded Coco Gauff had no problems advancing to the third round. She defeated Czech Tereza Valentova in two straight sets (6–2, 6–4). The match was over in an hour and a quarter.
Gauff was in the final at Roland Garros in 2022 and went to the semifinals last year.
