In an attempt to stop federal agents, the state of Minnesota and the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul are jointly suing the U.S. federal government.

The state and the Twin Cities allege in their lawsuit against the federal government in Washington, D.C., that the controversial actions of immigration police ICE in Minnesota violate federal law because the federal agents act arbitrarily.

The goal of the lawsuit is to remove ICE agents from the state or at least greatly reduce their presence.

"This ICE operation is basically a federal invasion, and it must end," says state Attorney General Keith Ellison.

The Trump administration and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, ordered hundreds more federal agents to Minneapolis on Sunday, bringing the total to more than 2,000 agents in the state to enforce immigration laws and remove undocumented migrants.

According to the lawsuit, ICE's targeting of Minnesota and other Democratic-controlled states is a violation of the Constitution and freedom of speech.

Thousands have demonstrated against ICE in Minnesota after last week's incident, when a 37-year-old woman was shot and killed by an ICE agent.
