The use of snus has increased explosively among young people in Sweden, and a ban on teachers using snus during school hours would contribute to de-normalizing the use, according to the Public Health Agency. Education Minister Simona Mohamsson (The Liberals) rejects such a ban and calls it "moralistic".

”Teachers' work environment has deteriorated over a long time. It would be tactless to worsen it further”, says Mohamsson in a written comment to TT.

She says that The Liberals in the budget for next year instead want to improve the teachers' conditions, among other things by re-regulating teaching time.

”Sweden's most important professional group should get more power in the classroom – not be met with a moralistic snuff ban”, she says.

A government inquiry proposed last year that students should not be allowed to use nicotine products at all during school hours, for example white snuff, even if they are over 18. The Public Health Agency stated in its consultation response that it would be "desirable" that teachers are also prohibited from snuffing during school hours in order to de-normalize the use and that the issue should be further investigated.

The government has not yet announced how they stand on the inquiry's proposal for a snuff ban for students.
