An investigation into introducing an age limit on social media was recently appointed by the government, and according to Larsson, the investigator must also look at porn sites.
The directives mention video sharing sites in various ways, so I believe this is an area that the investigation must include.
A survey from the Children's Ombudsman shows that the average age when children first search for pornography is 13, but Nina Larsson says that many are exposed much earlier.
Sexualized violent content
If you talk to civil society organizations and other stakeholders, they say that it is not uncommon for children to stumble upon grossly sexualized violent content much earlier than that. This must not happen.
She believes that it risks normalizing the view of violence in connection with sex.
Children and young people should not grow up believing that this is something they have to put up with.
In the US, France and the UK, for example, laws requiring age verification in various ways have recently come into force. In the UK, you now have to verify your age before you can access sites such as Pornhub, the world's largest porn site.
This can be done, for example, by registering a credit card, a digital age verification card or ID card on the site in question.
Protect the children
"We are now seeing that country after country is taking these issues seriously and there are regulations in, for example, the UK and other countries that work with slightly different forms of verification activities. I think that is exactly what we need to look at," says Larsson.
According to a 2017 survey by the Public Health Agency of Sweden, 72 percent of men in Sweden watch porn, while 68 percent of women never do. Nina Larsson says that adults who want to do so must accept that they have to verify themselves to protect children.
I am completely convinced that it is technically possible to find good solutions that protect privacy but also ensure that children and young people do not watch gross sexualized violence.
So far, it is the Liberals who are raising this specifically in connection with video sharing sites, she says.
But I am convinced that the other parties are in line with this as well.
