Swedish Mojang has written an agreement with British Merlin Entertainments to create theme areas with a "Minecraft" theme.

Merlin is investing 85 million pounds (nearly 1.2 billion kronor) in the first two locations, one of which is in the USA and one in the UK.

The theme areas will contain a ride attraction, accommodation, shops, and restaurants at existing Merlin locations. Players will also be able to unlock exclusive material in "Minecraft" at the theme area.

The exact location of the "Minecraft" areas is still being kept secret, but the first one will open in 2026 and the second the following year, with the ambition to "expand these experiences to other destinations globally", writes Merlin.

Merlin owns, among other things, the Sea-Life aquarium chain in many countries, as well as the wax museum Madame Tussaud and various Legoland Discovery Centers.

"Minecraft", which was created by Swedish Markus Persson in 2009, is according to some calculations the world's best-selling game.

Swedish Mojang was founded in 2009 by Markus "Notch" Persson, the same year that "Minecraft" was released in an early version. In 2014, the studio was bought up by American Microsoft.

With 300 million sold copies, "Minecraft" is described as possibly the world's best-selling game, possibly surpassed by "Tetris", depending on how you look at it. "Minecraft" is also available in a free version in China.

The main game has received two spin-offs in the form of "Minecraft: Dungeons" (2020) and "Minecraft Legends" (2023). Next year, a Hollywood film starring Jack Black ("School of Rock") and Jason Momoa ("Aquaman"), directed by Jared Hess ("Napoleon Dynamite"), will be released.

Mojang has hundreds of employees in Stockholm and also has offices in American Redmond.
