Argentina's president Javier Milei's party LLA (La Libertad Avanza) seems to get nearly 41 percent of the votes in Sunday's midterm elections, when 90 percent of the votes have been counted. If the result holds, it means a decisive victory for the party.

Milei promises further reforms, in connection with a celebration in Buenos Aires after the election.

Today, we have reached a turning point, today the building of a great Argentina begins, he says to supporters.

US President Donald Trump praises Milei after the election.

Trump: Doing a fantastic job

"Congratulations to President Javier Milei for his landslide victory in Argentina. He is doing a fantastic job!" Trump writes on Truth Social.

The political libertarian Milei won the presidential election in the fall of 2023 with a promise to get a grip on severe inflation, cut government spending and attract foreign investors. Milei often used a chainsaw as a symbol of the drastic reforms. If the result of Sunday's election stands, it will strengthen Milei's position in the cuts. It is also the first test of his support across the country since he became president.

36 million voters were eligible to vote in the midterm election to parliament. Half of the seats in the chamber of deputies and a third of the senate seats are elected in the election.

The Peronists, who have traditionally been a controversial political force on a populist left-wing edge, seem to be landing around 32 percent of the votes.

Milei's close contacts with US President Donald Trump have meant that the US has promised a support package of 40 billion dollars to Argentina, with the catch that the package may be stopped if voters do not support Milei. Further support has been given to back up the country's weak currency.
