After nearly two months of bitter cold, warmer weather is expected this weekend in southern Sweden - but temperatures will still be modest.

We have had stagnant weather in Sweden for a long time, but milder air is on its way, even though the forecast is quite uncertain, says SMHI meteorologist Caroline Vahlberg.

Snowfall will reach the west coast and western Svealand on Friday evening. On Saturday it will move through the southern half of the country and bring milder air.

On Saturday we may have temperatures around zero or occasionally above zero in Götaland and southern Svealand, says Vahlberg.

A long and cold winter has caused frost to penetrate deep into the ground, and road surface temperatures have not warmed up.

If rain falls on cold road surfaces, there is a definite risk of slippery road conditions.

SMHI issued a warning this afternoon that cold combined with strong winds is expected in the northern Lapland mountains on Friday. This will result in a strong cooling effect, which means that the risk of frostbite is high.
