It's set for a thrill when the winner of this year's second golf major is crowned on Sunday evening at Aronimink Golf Club outside Philadelphia.
A number of players are battling, at least on paper, for the title and the prize check of approximately 35 million kronor.
"I've never experienced anything like this, it's very tight. There are many good players who have a chance to win," Åberg said after Saturday's round, according to AFP.
He is one of five players who are two strokes behind leading American Alex Smalley, who is at -6.
"It was tough, it was windy," Smalley said after Saturday's round, according to AFP.
The 29-year-old Smalley is chasing his first PGA Tour title. He expects a "tough" Sunday.
Spaniard Jon Rahm, winner of the 2021 US Open and the 2023 Masters, is one of the five who, like Åberg, share second place. He is not surprised that so many are fighting for the close positions.
"It's an extremely difficult golf course. You really have to play well to have a chance," he said after Saturday's round, according to AFP.
Åberg had four birdies on Saturday. His best finish in a major is second place at the Masters in Augusta in 2024. However, two bogeys stopped the Swede from joining Smalley in the lead.
The 33-year-old Swede Mikael Lindberg is five strokes behind Smalley, at one under par, in a tie for 23rd place.
Alex Norén also had a good Saturday. He shot par (70) and is now four strokes back. Norén is tied for 64th place.
"I'll try to put in a good round tomorrow. It's always about getting better," he told Viaplay on Saturday.
