At least one person has died and around 25 are missing after the accident on Sunday, AFP news agency writes.
Around 50 people have been rescued. According to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, a search operation was under way late Sunday with six ships, two of them from the EU border agency Frontex.
The island of Gavdos, just over 30 kilometres south of Crete, is the southernmost point of Greece and Europe.
