Despite warnings and attempts at preparation, the category 5 hurricane Melissa threatens with catastrophic consequences on Jamaica. It is very difficult to protect oneself against these wind speeds, says Hilda Westberg, meteorologist at SMHI.

The winds over Jamaica are expected to reach speeds of between 80 and 100 meters per second.

These are speeds that are really not possible to imagine. There are few things that can withstand, both buildings and trees are blown away, says Westberg.

She compares the wind speeds to sticking your head out of a car that is driving at more than 250 kilometers per hour – and also says that the hurricane stands out in its strength.

If it's not the worst, then it's at least one of the worst, especially considering that the track goes straight over the island. Then it's not just the wind, but also a lot of rain is expected.

Extensive flooding and landslides threaten the island. In Jamaica, schools and airports have been closed and roofs have been reinforced. But Hilda Westberg means that the opportunities to prevent the devastation are limited.

One can try to prevent flooding with sandbags as well. But it's very difficult to protect yourself from these wind speeds.
