The phenomenon is said to have been seen, among other places, over northern Stockholm and parts of Uppland.
According to Eric Stempels, researcher at the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University, it is most likely a bolid – a bright meteor – that has been seen.
It moves at such a high speed that there is no other explanation, he says to the newspaper.
The bolid is also said to have been seen over Åland, where people have testified to a loud bang.
The bang is caused when the meteor burns up and even though it has been both seen and heard so clearly, the distance is often longer than one thinks.
Stempels estimates that the bolid was at a distance of around 30 kilometers.
Meteors can be seen every night. But one as fine as this you might see once every five years.
