Meta and Tiktok announce that the companies will follow Australia's age limit on social media – but warn that the law can be difficult to enforce.

From December 10, social media such as Instagram, Facebook, and Tiktok will be forced to remove users who are under 16 years old in Australia. The law was introduced in November 2024.

Tiktok and Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, say that it will be difficult to monitor the ban, but that they will follow the rules.

Meta states that they will need to remove hundreds of thousands of users who are not old enough for the new age limit, and that it entails technical challenges.

Companies that violate the law can be fined up to 49.5 million Australian dollars, equivalent to just over 300 million kronor.

This summer, it became clear that those under 16 years old will also be excluded from the video site Youtube.
