Two EU diplomats told the news site Euractiv that the idea is to say yes to the agreement at the meeting of EU ministers in Brussels on Tuesday. However, the agreement is still not formally on the agenda. At the same time, the EU Parliament is also expected to partially address the issue at its session in Strasbourg.
If the go-ahead is given, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen can then travel to a meeting in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, on December 20 for a definitive signing.
However, France and Poland, among others, remain critical of the agreement with the Mercosur countries – Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia. Major European agricultural organizations are also concerned and have called for large protest demonstrations in connection with the EU summit in Brussels next Thursday.
