Medin's Wife Faces Surreal Risk Amid Charges in Turkey

While the Swedish journalist Joakim Medin is imprisoned in Turkey, a constant countdown is underway for his wife Sofie Axelsson, who is pregnant with the couple's first child. There are many emotions, both anxious and cautiously hopeful, she says after the news that he has now been charged.

Sofie Axelsson is also a journalist. Like her husband Joakim Medin, she writes for the newspaper Dagens ETC. This summer, they are expected to become parents for the first time.

She is coming in July this summer. Then I clearly want him to be here by my side, that's still what I'm counting on, she says to TT.

Two charges

On Wednesday, the news came that Joakim Medin is being prosecuted for two points: terrorist crimes and insulting the president. In the event of a conviction, he risks 12 years in prison.

Twelve years as a maximum penalty is a completely absurd and surreal risk in this case. At the same time, there are many who have to wait a very long time for prosecution. It can take months, sometimes years. That he gets it so soon is in itself positive, says Axelsson.

Before the charges are presented, it is difficult to know what the accusations are about.

According to Sofie Axelsson and Dagens ETC's editor-in-chief Andreas Gustavsson, who have now taken part in the information together with Joakim Medin's lawyers, the evidence only concerns Medin's journalistic activities.

It is not certain that Joakim Medin himself has received the news about the prosecution on Wednesday morning, says Sofie Axelsson in the afternoon.

Been able to talk

The couple has been allowed to talk on the phone on two occasions since he was arrested at the end of March, and can exchange letters with each other. In the conversations, they have been able to joke and talk about the future.

It's an enormous relief to hear his voice and feel that he's still in good spirits.

Sofie Axelsson is also in continuous contact with the Swedish Foreign Ministry and feels that the case has been prioritized.

But now we're in a slightly different situation. We'll see how they handle this case further, she says.

Journalist Joakim Medin traveled to Istanbul on assignment for Dagens ETC on March 27 to report on the extensive protests in the country, after Istanbul's mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested earlier in the spring.

Medin, who has visited Turkey as a journalist several times but has not had problems with the authorities before, was arrested directly at the airport.

After that, he was transferred to the high-security prison Marmara in Silivri outside Istanbul, where many of Turkey's political prisoners are or have been. Medin is sitting in the same section as the imprisoned mayor Imamoglu.

On April 23, he was charged with terrorist crimes and insulting the president, which can result in a total of 12 years in prison.
