AP, Reuters, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, CNN and NPR. But also more Trump-friendly, conservative media such as Newsmax and The Washington Times. All refuse to sign the Pentagon's new code of conduct for journalists.
"No right"
"Access to the Pentagon is a privilege, not a right", counters Pete Hegseth, whose department on the order of President Donald Trump recently changed its name from the Department of Defense to the Department of War, on social media.
The deadline to sign expires at 5 pm on Tuesday, local time
The new rules were presented at the end of September. In brief, they mean that journalists covering the Pentagon must promise to only publish approved information, which in practice excludes the use of anonymous sources, and not move freely in the building. At the beginning of October, after negotiations with media companies, the Pentagon backed down somewhat: among other things, journalists will no longer be forced to submit their texts to the department before publication, writes The New York Times.
Met with criticism
The rules have met with sharp criticism from media organizations that claim they violate the constitutionally protected freedom of speech. The National Press Club, a journalist union, urges the Pentagon to withdraw the decision.
So far, only One America News, a conservative cable channel, has announced that it will sign the regulations, reports Axios.
