It was on the fifth hole that Bryson DeChambeau trampled the long grass around his ball after a wayward shot, and was then awarded two penalty strokes after the end of the second round.
Afterwards, the American was furious and threatened to withdraw from the major, but competed as usual during Saturday's third round.
Rory McIlroy, who won the British Open in 2014, does not appreciate DeChambeau's performance.
"I'm not going to defend Bryson. I'm not particularly fond of him. I think a lot of what he does is a game for the galleries," McIlroy said.
I don't think there's any doubt that he improved the clearance for his backswing. Then it doesn't matter whether it was careless or intentional. Hopefully it was just careless, but I definitely think the two-stroke penalty was justified.
McIlroy went one under par for the day, and is currently tied for 30th place at 2-under overall after three rounds.
