Volman became known as a guitarist and singer in the surf rock band The Turtles, which achieved the greatest success with the single "Happy together", which in January 1967 reached the top spot on the Billboard list.

After the band dissolved in 1970, he and former Turtles member Howard Kaylan started the humorous rock duo Flo & Eddie, where Volman performed under the name Flo - an abbreviation of The Phlorescent Leech. Later, the two joined Frank Zappa's group Mothers of Invention.

In recent times, Volman toured with several groups on the "Happy together" tour, where, among others, Jay and the Americans, Little Anthony, and Ron Dante from The Archies participated.

Jay Reincke from Jay and the Americans says via his agency BiCoastal Productions that Mark Volman was a "wonderful person" and "without a doubt Turtles' soul."
