Borg Høiby's lawyer had requested that his client be released. The court said no, but approved that he be given an ankle monitor and thus be able to spend the next four weeks of detention at the Crown Prince's residence, Skaugum.

But the last word has not been said. Shortly after the court's decision, the prosecution announced that it would appeal. It claims that there is a risk that Borg Høiby will commit new crimes. It has until Tuesday at 12 noon to formally file an appeal.

His defence attorney, Petar Sekulic, tells the media that the ankle monitor is "an option he can live with for the time being":

It's better now than before, but being in custody is still a strain, Sekulic continues, saying that Borg Høiby hasn't had it easy, given the family situation.

“Tough time”

"My family has been through a pretty tough time," says Marius Borg Høiby during the detention hearing.

The 29-year-old "bonus prince"'s mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, underwent a lung transplant in June, replacing both of her lungs. She was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018 and her condition has worsened over the past six months.

Marius Borg Høiby, the Crown Princess's son from a previous relationship and not a member of the royal family, has been in custody since his trial began in February. In June, he was sentenced to four years in prison for rape, among other charges.

40 or so crimes

He was first arrested in August 2024 after police were called to an address in the Frogner district of central Oslo. His then-girlfriend was found with visible head injuries. Two former girlfriends later came forward and accused him of violence.

Borg Høiby was charged with around 40 crimes and has appealed the verdict, which has not yet become final.
