US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Qatar's leader and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin al-Thani on Saturday.
Qatar's role as an important intermediary for the United States was raised, pending Iran's response to a peace proposal.
During the conversation, "US support for Qatar's defense and the importance of continued close cooperation to deter threats and promote stability and security across the Middle East were discussed," according to a statement from the US.
